Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

Cesar Millan, Melissa Jo Peltier, "Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems"

Harmony Books; 1 edition (September 18, 2007) | English | 0307382052 | 270 pages | PDF | 5.42 MB

There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan - star of National Geographic Channel's hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan - reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America's most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense - his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar's Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.

Cesar's formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

You'll learn:

· What your dog really needs may not be what you're giving him

· Why a dog's natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship

· How to relate to your dog on a canine level

· There are no 'problem breeds', just problem owners

· Why every dog needs a job

· How to choose a dog who's right for you and your family

· The difference between discipline and punishment

Sexual Citizenship: The material construction of sexualities, David T.Evans

Routledge | English | ISBN 0203720636 | 360 pages | PDF | 2.33 MB | 1993

The second half of this century has seen a pronounced escalation in the already well established sexualisation of developed capitalist societies at all structural levels, from day-to-day interactions and relationships to long-term market planning and state policy formation (Armytage et al. 1984; Gebhard 1984). Of course ‘sexuality has always been of central concern to human beings’ (Brake 1982:13) because of its associations with procreativity, its credited though usually unspecified ‘mysteries’ and apparently unsocialised animality, but never before has this concern been in explicit and coded terms, so widely and incessantly discussed, so prominently marketed and consumed, so repeatedly the site of contests over ‘permissiveness’, ‘liberation’, the pursuit or infringement of rights and freedoms.

If this ‘sanctification of the sexual as “sexuality” indeed is one of the major characteristics of our culture’ (Heath 1982:147), it surely is not one that is so in isolation, discretely segregated from other social, political and economic structures and associated cultures. Many of the critiques which stress that sexuality has ‘become our sole mode of transcendence… our only touchstone of authenticity’ (White 1980) perpetuate traditional dominant ideologies of the sexual as individual, personal, private, definitively divorced from material structures and power relations. Yet, as merely passing references to the civil, political and social rights of various sexual minorities, and the marketing of sexual imagery and commodities make clear, this is manifestly not the case. There has been a sexualisation of late twentieth-century first world capitalist cultures but, behind the distracting verdicts of experts who claim via labels such as the Sexual Fix (Heath 1982) and Sex Religion (Greer 1984) that sexuality is a private escape from the alienation of the public material world, it is clear that in many and various guises, it is formally and customarily institutionalised and incorporated within the latter.

Novartis Foundation, "Anaphylaxis (Novartis Foundation Symposia)"

Wiley; 1 edition (March 12, 2004) | English | 0470861142 | 306 pages | PDF | 2.12 MB

Anaphylaxis is an immediate-type allergic reaction involving the whole organism. It is the most life-threatening allergic condition. Although there are few exact epidemiological data regarding prevalence, estimates regarding insect sting anaphylaxis range from 1~3 0n the general population, but much higher values have been reported by some authors for food and drug-induced anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is the main acute killer of allergic individuals.

Although anaphylaxis was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, there are still many unresolved issues. These include non-IgE-mediated anaphylactoid reactions, non-immunologically mediated anaphylactoid (pseudo-allergic) reactions, pathophysiological events at the microcirculatory level, appropriate therapy for the acute reaction, strategies for prevention, public education about the problem and new approaches to prevention and therapy at the IgE level. All these subjects are discussed in this book.

Since anaphylaxis occurs acutely and is unforeseen, it is very difficult to organize controlled studies regarding therapy and prevention. The spectrum of symptomatology covers many clinical areas (skin, respiratory, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal system), therefore inter-disciplinary approaches are necessary for progress in the field. There is widespread uncertainty among physicians about therapy, especially concerning self-administered treatment.

In this important book, an multidisciplinary group of experts explore the pathophysiology of different types of anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions. Evidence is presented on the epidemiology of these conditions while problems relating to diagnosis, therapy and prevention are examined in detail. This thorough and up-to-date coverage of the subject will be of great interest to all clinical immunologists, researchers and physicians who deal with this life-threatening condition.

As If an Enemy's Country: The British Occupation of Boston and the Origins of Revolution

As If an Enemy's Country: The British Occupation of Boston and the Origins of Revolution (Pivotal Moments in American History) By Richard Archer

Publisher: Oxford University Press 2010 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 0195382471 | PDF | 3 MB

In the dramatic few years when colonial Americans were galvanized to resist British rule, perhaps nothing did more to foment anti-British sentiment than the armed occupation of Boston. As If an Enemy's Country is Richard Archer's gripping narrative of those critical months between October 1, 1768 and the winter of 1770 when Boston was an occupied town.

Bringing colonial Boston to life, Archer deftly moves between the governor's mansion and cobblestoned back-alleys as he traces the origins of the colonists' conflict with Britain. He reveals the maneuvering of colonial political leaders such as Governor Francis Bernard, Lieutenant Governor Thomas Hutchinson, and James Otis Jr. as they responded to London's new policies, and he evokes the outrage many Bostonians felt towards Parliament and its local representatives.

Archer captures the popular mobilization under the leadership of John Hancock and Samuel Adams that met the oppressive imperial measures--most notably the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act--with demonstrations, Liberty Trees, violence, and non-importation agreements. When the British government decided to garrison Boston with troops, it posed a shocking challenge to the people of Massachusetts. The city was flooded with troops; almost immediately, tempers flared and violent conflicts broke out. Archer's vivid tale culminates in the swirling tragedy of the Boston Massacre and its aftermath, including the trial and exoneration of the British troops involved.

A thrilling and original work of history, As If an Enemy's Country tells the riveting story of what made the Boston townspeople, and with them other colonists, turn toward revolution.

Transmission Lines and Lumped Circuits: Fundamentals and Applications

Transmission Lines and Lumped Circuits: Fundamentals and Applications

Giovanni Miano, Antonio Maffucci, "Transmission Lines and Lumped Circuits: Fundamentals and Applications (Electromagnetism)"

Academic Press; 1 edition (February 13, 2001) | English | 0121897109 | 479 pages | PDF | 16.93 MB

The time-domain analysis of networks composed of linear transmission lines and nonlinear and/or time-varying lumped circuits is at the basis of design and verification of modern high-speed electronic circuits and large power distribution systems. This book provides an in-depth and comprehensive study of time-domain models of these networks.

The theory of wave propagation on linear transmission lines is presented with an unified approach, that is applicable to any kind of line: two-conductor or multiconductor, lossless or lossy, uniform or nonuniform, with parameters depending or not on frequency. A general method is described to characterize the terminal behavior of transmission lines, and to obtain equivalent circuit representations, both in the frequency and in the time domain.

Unique feature of this book is the extension of fundamental concepts of the lumped circuit theory, such as those of associated discrete circuit and of associated resistive circuit, to networks of transmission lines and lumped circuits. The well-posedness of the network equations and their numerical approximations is deeply investigated by using these concepts. Fascinating phenomena such as periodic solutions, bifurcations and chaos are observed in transmission lines connected to nonlinear active elements.

Key Features:

· A simple, concise and completely general way to present the wave propagation on transmission lines, including a thorough study of the line equations in characteristic form.

· Frequency and time domain characterization of the terminal behavior of any linear transmission line.

· A unified approach for the analysis of networks composed of distributed and lumped circuits.

· Bifurcations and chaos in transmission lines.

Benefits: The book is intended as a reference in advanced courses of Circuit Theory and Design, Electromagnetism, Electromagnetic Compatibility, and as a guide for researchers and industrial professionals involved in the computer-aided design of electrical and electronic networks. The students will find here a simple but rigorous explanation of wave propagation along transmission lines, a completely general method to characterize the terminal behavior of the lines both in frequency and time domain, and a unified approach to study networks composed of distributed and lumped circuits. The researchers and professionals will appreciate the time domain modeling of distributed circuits, providing simple equivalent circuit representations, ready to be implemented in SPICE-like circuit simulators, for the analysis of large networks.

This book will be of interest to a broad audience of engineers and researchers involved in electromagnetic analysis, design of VLSI circuits, power systems, and CAD software development.

Root Physiology: from Gene to Function

Root Physiology: from Gene to Function

Hans Lambers, Timothy D. Colmer, "Root Physiology: from Gene to Function (Plant Ecophysiology)"

Springer; 1 edition (December 16, 2005) | English | 1402040989 | 272 pages | PDF | 4.11 MB

In the last decade, enormous progress has been made on the physiology of plant roots, including on a wide range of molecular aspects. Much of that progress has been captured in the chapters of this book. Breakthroughs have been made possible through integration of molecular and whole-plant aspects. The classical boundaries between physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology have vanished. There has been a strong focus on a limited number of model species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. That focus has allowed greater insight into the significance of specific genes for plant development and functioning. However, many species are very different from A. thaliana, in that they are mycorrhizal, develop a symbiosis with N2-fixing microsymbionts, or have other specialised root structures. Also, some have a much greater capacity to resist extreme environments, such as soil acidity, salinity, flooding or heavy-metal toxicities, due to specific adaptations. Research on species other than A. thaliana is therefore pivotal, to develop new knowledge in plant sciences in a comprehensive manner. This fundamental new knowledge can be the basis for important applications in, e.g., agriculture and plant conservation. Although significant progress has been made, much remains to be learnt. It is envisaged that discoveries made in the recent past will likely lead to major breakthroughs in the next decade.

Thomas Aquinas: A Very Short Introduction

Thomas Aquinas: A Very Short Introduction

Thomas Aquinas: A Very Short Introduction By Fergus Kerr

Publisher: Oxford University Press 2009 | 144 Pages | ISBN: 0199556644 | PDF | 2 MB

Thomas Aquinas is one of the giants of medieval philosophy, a thinker who had--and who still has--a profound influence on Western thought. Aquinas was a controversial figure in his time who was often engaged in fierce theological debates. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of the Thomistic school of philosophy and theology. This Very Short Introduction will look at Aquinas in a historical context, and explore the Church and culture into which Aquinas was born. It will consider Aquinas as philosopher and theologian, and will look at the relationship between philosophy and religion in the thirteenth century. Fergus Kerr, in this engaging and informative introduction, makes the Summa Theologiae, Aquinas's greatest single work, accessible to new readers. He also sheds valuable light on the importance of Thomas Aquinas in modern times, showing why Aquinas matters now, illustrating the significant role that the writings of Aquinas play in contemporary debate.

About the Author

Fergus Kerr is Honorary Fellow of the School of Divinity in the University of Edinburgh. He is widely recognized as a philosopher and theologian of high distinction. He is particularly well known for his work on Ludwig Wittgenstein and Thomas Aquinas. He is also Editor of the journal New Blackfriars.

The Language of the Papyri By T. V. Evans, D. D. Obbink

Publisher: Oxford University Press, 2010 | 380 Pages | ISBN: 0199237085 | PDF | 2 MB

The modern rediscovery of the Greek and Latin papyri from Egypt has transformed our knowledge of the ancient world. We cannot, however, make the same claim in the specific area of language study. Although important studies of the language of the papyri have appeared sporadically over the past century, we are still dealing today with a linguistic resource of extraordinary richness which has hardly begun to be explored. Every scrap of papyrus and every ostracon (potsherd) or tablet unearthed has the potential to change some aspect of the way we think about the Greek and Latin languages. This book demonstrate that potential, by gathering together essays from seventeen scholars who present a variety of perspectives and methodological approaches. The Language of the Papyri charts current directions of international research, and will also provide a stimulus for future work.

About the Author

T. V. Evans is Lecturer in the Department of Ancient History, Macquarie University, Sydney. D. D. Obbink is Tutor in Greek Literature, Christ Church, and University Lecturer in Papyrology and Greek Literature, Oxford.

Pratique du calcul bayésien (Statistique et probabilités appliquées)

Springer | 2010-01-01 | ISBN: 2287996664 | 336 pages | PDF | 6 MB

Facing the Music: Shaping Music Education from a Global Perspective

Facing the Music: Shaping Music Education from a Global Perspective

Facing the Music: Shaping Music Education from a Global Perspective By Huib Schippers

Publisher: Oxford University Press 2009 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0195379756 | PDF | 2 MB

Facing the Music investigates the practices and ideas that have grown from some five decades of cultural diversity in music education, developments in ethnomusicology, and the rise of 'world music'. Speaking from rich, hands-on experience of more than thirty years at various levels of music education (music in schools, community organizations and professional training courses), Huib Schippers makes a powerful case for the crucial role of learning music in shaping rich and diverse musical environments for the 21st century, both in practical terms and at a conceptual level: "what we hear is the product of what we believe about music."

Advocating a contemporary, positive and realistic approach to cultural diversity in music education and transmission, Schippers advocates taking into account and celebrating the natural dynamics of music. He argues that "most music travels remarkably well", and regards every musical act as an expression of the 'here and now', as do many of the musicians and scholars he quotes. In this way, he challenges stifling directives to recreate 'authentic contexts', which in fact constantly change (and have always changed) in the cultures of origin as well. This liberates music educators to seek with integrity appropriate ways of presenting music at all levels of education: in schools, community settings, and professional training.

In seven succinct chapters that each approach the issues from a different angle, Schippers gradually unfolds the complexities of learning and teaching music 'out of context' in an accessible manner, and presents a coherent model to approach these, as well as lucid suggestions for translating the resulting ideas in practice. While mapping the various factors that determine all acts of music transmission, he also comes to surprising insights into the nature and preconceptions underlying much formal music education settings across the world, including those focusing on western classical music.

Facing the Music provides a rich resource for reflection and practice for all those involved in teaching and learning music, from policy maker to classroom teacher.

Inside the C++ Object Model By Stanley B. Lippman

Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional 1996 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 0201834545 | PDF + CHM | 2 MB

Inside the C++ Object Model is aimed at those developers who routinely use C++ but feel the discomfort of not really knowing the underlying weight of many common operations they perform or constructs they peruse.

A particularly fit subset of these programmers is made up of the hardcore plumbers who pay their bills writing C++-based programming tools and libraries, or those who assume the uneasy role of the "official code optimizer" in a medium-to-large development team. Each of these programmers are going to immensely appreciate the intensive coverage of the object-oriented features offered by the language, their run-time overhead (in terms of execution time and binary size), and their influence in compilation times. This knowledge constitutes a major aid when it comes time to decide whether a certain language feature fits your needs without breaking your requirements. Moreover, along the way the text is sprinkled with interesting anecdotes explaining why certain common myths regarding C++ are nothing more than unfounded rant. --Davide Marcato, Dr. Dobb's Electronic Review of Computer Books

Android Application Development: Programming with the Google SDK By Rick Rogers, John Lombardo, Zigurd Mednieks, Blake Meike

Publisher: O'Reilly Media 2009 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 0596521472 | PDF | 3 MB

This practical book provides the concepts and code you need to develop software with Android, the open-source platform for cell phones and mobile devices that's generating enthusiasm across the industry. Based on the Linux operating system and developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance, Android has the potential to unite a fragmented mobile market. "Android Application Development" introduces this programming environment, and offers you a complete working example that demonstrates Android architectural features and APIs. With this book, you will: get a complete introduction to the Android programming environment, architecture, and tools; build a modular application, beginning with a core module that serves to launch modules added in subsequent chapters; learn the concepts and architecture of a specific feature set, including views, maps, location-based services, persistent data storage, 2D and 3D graphics, media services, telephony services, and messaging; use ready-to-run example code that implements each feature; and, delve into advanced topics, such as security, custom views, performance analysis, and internationalization. The book is a natural complement to the existing Android documentation provided by Google. Whether you want to develop a commercial application for mobile devices, or just want to create a mobile mashup for personal use, "Android Application Development" demonstrates how you can design, build, and test applications for the new mobile market.

Randy Gaugler, Anwar L. Bilgrami, "Nematode Behaviour"

CABI; 1 edition (September 16, 2004) | English | 0851998186 | 444 pages | PDF | 6.74 MB

Netamode worms are among the most ubiquitous organisms on earth. They include free-living forms as well as parasites of plants, insects, humans and other animals. Netamode behavior is a key issue in understanding of these ways of life or parasitic relationships.

This book provides a unique, comprehensive review of current knowledge of the behavior of netamodes. All of the key topics such as locomotion and orientation, feeding and reproductive behavior, and biotic and abiotic interactions are reviewed. Written by leading authorities from the USA, UK, India and New Zealand, it brings together a wide range of disciplines and will attract a broad readership.
